Before you call
It helps to have:
- Your address, so the request reaches a contractor who works there
- What you need: a new egress window, a bigger opening, a well, a cover or a code fix
- Whether the basement is finished, partly finished or bare concrete
- If you know it, whether the foundation is poured concrete or block
- Any deadline, like a basement finish schedule or a home sale closing date
Someone already sleeping in a basement room with no escape window? Make sure working smoke alarms are in and near that room, keep the path to the stairs clear, and mention it when you call so the contractor knows it's a priority.
